The Vinton Historical Society  invites you to tour the Upson House, home of the Vinton Museum, where thousands of historically significant artifacts reside.

The Museum has acquired more than 4,000 items for display and preservation. Exhibits include the Military Hall, Music/Church Room, School Room, Dining Room, Art Gallery, Kitchen, Children's Room, Bedroom, Business Room, and Tool Room.

The Museum also houses a vast collection of photographs from in and around the Vinton area — right in the heart of Virginia's Blue Ridge.

Additionally, we keep archives of weddings, deaths, military service, churches, clubs, organizations, buildings, homes, and cemeteries.

More than 1,000 people visit the Museum annually.

'Rising to new heights' fundraiser underway

Give us a lift with your donation!

The Vinton Historical Society is seeking funding to resolve the limited access to the second-floor exhibits at the Vinton History Museum located in Downtown Vinton. This project, which we are identifying as “Rising to New Heights,” is intended to enhance accessibility and community engagement by directly addressing the challenge that our current steep and narrow staircase presents to any mobility-challenged visitors, volunteers and staff should they wish to access exhibits and resources on the second floor.

The solution to this issue, identified many years ago, but recognized as a significant financial leap of faith at this time, is the installation of a cargo/accessibility lift. More than any other action we might consider, this one project could ensure equal access for everyone, as well as making it much simpler to move exhibits and supplies between floors.

We prioritized this project through community, employee, and volunteer input; together with the recognition this action is crucial in making the Museum ADA-compliant. It is our duty to make our community’s rich history accessible to all, and the installation of the lift is the best solution to achieve this goal while fostering an inclusive and vibrant community.

With an estimated cost of $170,000, the lift will provide a means for all visitors, including those with mobility constraints, to explore the museum’s valuable resources and historical artifacts.

The installation of the much-needed lift will not only enhance accessibility for visitors but also significantly benefit the dedicated museum volunteers, many of whom are retired and are among the senior population. By providing them with improved access to the second floor, the project will create an environment for volunteers to actively participate in museum activities, share their expertise, install new exhibits, and engage in meaningful interactions with visitors.

The lift will also enhance safety protocols and instill a sense of civic pride in the community. As an active participant in the Town’s revitalization efforts, the Historical Society is dedicated to contributing to the realization of the Town’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan of enhancing the Town’s Infrastructure and Livability, furthering the goal of equitable access for all residents.

The current fundraising need and goal to complete the project is $60,000 total. The Vinton Historical Society asks consideration of a monetary gift of any size toward the total needed to construct the cargo/accessibility lift. The Vinton Historical Society has saved $60,000 toward the project over the past 20 years and anticipates receiving up to $50,000 in grant money. The fundraiser began in April 2024 and will conclude in December 2024.

A donor recognition wall within the museum will provide an opportunity for acknowledging individuals, families, major donors, businesses, corporate, and foundation gifts.

The Vinton History Museum is operated by the Vinton Historical Society, a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to researching and documenting items of historical relevance.

A real-life example of our need
for a lift

To illustrate just one challenge that was observed by Museum Executive Director Judy Cunningham, she recounted the visit of a beautiful 8-year-old girl to the Museum.

This young girl eagerly wanted to explore Vinton’s history, particularly the Children’s room located on the second floor.

Her journey, however, was impeded by the braces she wore, which became noticeable as she slowly navigated the stairs, gripping the handrail to avoid falling.

Her determination was inspiring, and it exemplifies the challenges many members of our community face.
